今人读书不识字，下笔淆讹十三四。许徐训诂自分明，争奈人都不省视。
昔者吾友戴敬夫，磨砻字学天下无。予少窃闻其绪论，虽知梗概心犹粗。
中年奉教萧尺木，尺木篆隶精且熟。每与予言辄终夜，字学稍知其节目。
平生结交多俊民，此道茫昧恒失真。何期晚遇汤元翼，奄有二子成三人。
犹记鲁江同作客，颇领微言恨匆迫。别来十载梦魂劳，老去重逢须鬓白。
闲时缓步过吾庐，相对惟应话六书。秦汉晋唐体多变，那能贯穿为发摅。
当时戴萧所未悉，今日询君得其实。我亦著书曰蒙求，乞君釐正方成帙。

方文（1612---1669）字尔止，号嵞山，原名孔文，字尔识，明亡后更名一耒，别号淮西山人、明农、忍冬，安徽安庆府桐城人，今桐城市区凤仪里人。方大铉长子。明末诸生，入清不仕，靠游食、卖卜、行医或充塾师为生，与复社、几社中人交游，以气节自励。方文之诗前期学杜，多苍老之作；后期专学白居易，明白如话，长于叙事，早年与钱澄之齐名，后与方贞观、方世举并称“桐城三诗家”，著有《嵞山集》。
