闽县林琴南孝廉纾六七岁时，从师读。师贫甚，炊不得米。林知之，亟归，以袜实米，满之，负以致师。师怒，谓其窃，却弗受。林归以告母，母笑曰：“若心固善，然此岂束修之礼？”即呼备，赍米一石致之塾，师乃受。

译文
闽县（今福建福州市）人林纾（字琴南，当时是孝廉，清明时对举人的称呼）六七岁的时候，跟随老师读书。老师非常贫困，做饭没有米。林纾知道后，急忙回家，用袜子装米，装满了，背着送给老师。老师生气了，说这是他偷来的，推辞不接受。林纾回来后告诉了母亲，母亲笑着说：“你这份心意固然是好的，但是这样的方式（袜子装米）难道是学生赠送老师礼物的礼节吗？”随即让人准备，林纾携带着一石米送到私塾，老师于是接受了。
注释
林琴南孝廉纾(shū)：林纾，字琴南，福建阂县（今福州人）。近代文学家，尤以翻译外国小说名世。孝廉，明清时对举人的称呼。
亟(jí)：急忙。
束脩（修）：本指十条干肉，后来通常指学生拜师或亲友之间赠送的礼物。
呼备：叫人准备。
赍（jī）:携带。
从：跟随。
实：装。
负：背着。
谓：说。
却：推却。
乃：于是
