常州府无锡人，字材老。袁默弟。徽宗崇宁二年进士。宣和六年复中词学兼茂科。累官监察御史，陈边防十三事，以诛佞臣为先，不纳，遂引疾致仕。高宗建炎初召为左司谏，直言忤宰臣，黜守岳州。会金兵大入，叛臣李允文据鄂州剽掠荆湖，植条奏其状，不久遇害。
