处州龙泉人，字致远。神宗熙宁间进士。为王安石婿，从之学为文词。哲宗立，为太学正，迁秘书省正字，编修神宗史。寻擢中书舍人。司马光等追贬，吕大防等责官，皆涛为制词，文极丑诋。安焘降学士，涛封还命书，被蔡京劾为党，罢知光州。以龙图阁待制提举崇禧观卒。
