建宁府浦城人，字直翁，号德壹。徐应龙子。宁宗嘉定七年进士。累迁太常博士，奏疏欲裁抑史弥远恤典，召用真德秀、魏了翁。复历权兵部尚书兼侍读等职。理宗淳祐九年，兼同修国史、实录院同修撰，迁礼部尚书。拜学士、同知枢密院事。十二年进参知政事。后被劾提举宫观。景定三年致仕。卒谥忠简。
