因书斋名“存”，世称存斋先生。又因讲学于象山书院，被称为“象山先生”，学者常称其为“陆象山”。南宋孝宗乾道八年（1172年）进士，调靖安主簿，历国子正。绍熙二年（1191年），知荆门军，创修军城，稳固边防，甚有政绩。绍熙三年十二月（1193年1月）卒，年五十四。追谥文安。陆九渊为宋明两代“心学” 的开山之祖，与朱熹齐名，而见解多不合。主“心（我）即理”说，言“宇宙便是吾心，吾心即是宇宙”，“学茍知道，六经皆我注脚”。明王守仁继承发展其学，成为“陆王学派”，对后世影响极大。著有《象山先生全集》。
