日落征途远，怅然临古城。
颓墉寒雀集，荒堞晚乌惊。
萧森灌木上，迢递孤烟生。
霞景焕余照，露气澄晚清。
秋风转摇落，此志安可平！
秋晚登古城鉴赏
这是一首登临怀古之作。首联“日落征途远，怅然临古城”，紧扣题目，直抒胸臆。日暮时分，四野幽暝，纵目远望，路途还很遥远，诗人在怅然间，登临苍凉的古城，心情更加寂寥。一开篇诗人就借眼前实景的描写，渲染了一种萧瑟凄寂的氛围。正所谓“樵童牧竖，并皆吟讽”。他同类题材创作，如《郢城怀古》：“客心悲暮序，登墉瞰平陆”；《登叶县故城谒沈诸梁庙》：“总辔临秋原，登城望寒日。”都类此。
中间三联由首联生发，写景抒情，寓情于景，情景交融，浑然一体。次联“颓墉寒雀集，荒堞晚乌惊”：衰败的城墙头，晚归的鸟雀、乌鸦聚集在一起悲鸣着，不时又阵阵惊起，“萧森灌木上，迢递孤烟生”。城下灌木丛的上空，升起袅袅炊烟。“霞景焕余照，露气澄晚清”：远处，高空的彩霞折射出夕阳的余照，原野的露气洗净了傍晚的昏暝，显得明媚一些。诗人内心的幽郁，似乎也得到一定的缓解。但一个“余”字，一个“晚”字，仍然抑郁着写景抒情的基调：“霞景”虽明艳，但毕竟是“余照”；“露气”虽清新，但毕竟是“晚清”。
经过中间三联写景抒情手法的精心铺垫，诗就自然地过渡到尾联的强烈抒情：意谓：肃杀的秋风固然可以使万物凋败，而我的心志岂能就此消失！结得极妙，呼应首联，如果说开始的“怅然临古城”，只是诗人淡淡的自我喟叹，抒发内心的惆怅落寞，那结束的“此志安可平”却是诗人对现实的强烈抗议。

李百药（565--648），字重规，定州安平（今属河北）人，唐朝史学家、诗人。 其父李德林曾任隋内史令，预修国史，撰有《齐史》。隋文帝时百药仕太子舍人、东宫学士。隋炀帝时仕桂州司马职，迁建安郡丞。后归唐，拜中书舍人、礼部侍郎、散骑常侍。人品耿直，曾直言上谏唐太宗取消诸侯，为太宗采纳。曾受命修订五礼、律令。另外，据《安平县志》载：李百药及家族墓地遗址在今河北省安平县程油子乡寺店村南。
