译文
透过清秋的薄雾，传来了采菱姑娘的笑语。
湖面风平浪静，像白色的素绢平铺。
到手的美好风光可别虚负，我在湖上久久留恋，不肯离去。
相交而过的画船上，佳人对我嫣然一笑，是那样的娇妩。
江山确实美如画图，可惜毕竟不是我的家乡，不知什么时候才能回到故土？

平湖乐·采菱人语隔秋烟鉴赏
乐府诗中有《江南弄》、《采莲曲》等，表现江南水乡的特有风情。早期的散曲文人多以《小桃红》的曲牌，将乐府的这种风调移植入曲中，曲牌也因而有《平湖乐》的别名。
秋天是菱角莲蓬的收获季节，水乡姑娘们荡着莲舟，来到湖塘之上，一边劳作，一边笑语喧哗。这种景象本身就充溢着生活之美。妙在作品将它放在“秋烟”也即清秋的晨雾中表现，作为隐隐约约的远景，这种朦胧美令人心旌动荡。诗人自己也荡舟于湖上，风平波静，水面如摇曳的一块白绢。“波静如横练”，既有“平”的形感，又有“白”的色感，更有“软”的质感，这是作者置身的近景。“隔秋烟”的朦胧与“横练”的明晰形成一重对照，“人语”与“波静”又形成一重对照，从而使短短的两句景语中，蕴涵了丰富的诗情画意。
“入手风光莫流转”，语本杜甫《曲江》的诗句：“传语风光共流转，暂时相赏莫相违。”“流转”即迁延变化之意。这是诗人面对湖上美景的感想，何况此时他的小船已经穿过了“秋烟”，同采菱的姑娘们打了照面。后者对他投以嫣然一笑，更足令诗人销魂。“共留连”是巧妙的斡旋，它既是对“入手风光”感想的延续，又是作者相逢画船的实情写照。江南水乡风物明媚，人情旖旎，诗人陶醉其间是可以想象的。
岂料结尾笔锋陡然一转，悲从中生。诗人借用王粲《登楼赋》“虽信美而非吾土兮，曾何足以少留”的名句，引出了自己油然而生的慨叹：“问何日是归年”。“何日是归年”是杜甫《绝句二首》中的成句，可见这种乡愁在诗人心底中蓄藏已非一日。从客方的美景中意识到“终非吾土”，从极度的快意中涌现出归期杳渺的惆怅，就特别令人悲怆。这种大起大落的手笔，具有动魄惊心的效果。
《平湖乐》（即《小桃红》）格多律句，故清人朱彝尊《词综》即将此曲收入为词。由宋词一路衍化而来的那部分曲，确曾存在亦词亦曲、“词以文（而）言，曲以声（而）言”（刘熙载《艺概》）的一体二名的情形。但混淆的产生，主要还是缘于早期文人以词笔为散曲的创作倾向。该篇末句“问”为衬字，可知作者是将它认同为曲的。
