译文
扬州城里夜市繁华，千灯万火映照碧云，高楼内外到处可见浓妆艳抹的女子，那些寻欢作乐的游客纷纷而来，络绎不绝。
如今的天下纷乱不已，再也不像以往的太平盛世那样，但想不到这里依然是笙歌一片，通宵不散。
注释
扬州市：扬州（治江都，今江苏扬州市）的指定商业区。买卖交易必须在市内进行。按规定，诸州、县可以设市，称××州市或××县市。如某州、某县有一个以上的市，则在市前冠以方位或其他词语加以限定，如东市、西市等。
夜市：夜间的集市。《唐六典》卷二十：“凡市，以日午击鼓三百声，而众会；日入前七刻，击钲三百声，而众以散。”夜市显然突破了这个规定，反映唐时城市商业的繁荣。
碧云：碧空。
红袖：原指女子的艳色衣衫，这里借代女子。
纷纷：众多。
时平日：承平之日。
自：语气助词，表肯定，无实义。
笙歌：歌舞的音乐。笙，簧管乐器。此处泛指乐器演奏时发出的声音。
晓闻：通宵达旦。

夜看扬州市创作背景
此诗是王建在魏博幕奉命出使淮南，夜游扬州市有感而作。王建的这首诗对扬州的夜市作了简单概括的描述，并从中可以看到那时的夜市已十分热闹，以至营业时间出现通宵达旦的繁荣景象。

夜看扬州市鉴赏
这首诗从其夜景着笔，可说从一个重要侧面表现了扬州的繁华，连同诗人的感慨。
前两句实写扬州夜景。首句写其静景。“千灯”，说明灯之多。诗人在地面“千灯”和距离地面遥远的“碧云“之问只用一个“照”字，就将夜晚扬州灯光的光亮程度真实表现了出来。次句则写动景，整个扬州市，酒楼多，歌妓多，乘兴吃酒玩乐的商客多；而这“三多”合为一体，就使扬州市的夜晚成为一个喧嚣的、旋转的世界。
三、四句写诗人的感慨。看到眼前繁盛景象，诗人不禁联想到扬州以外广大地区的萧条败落。自从“安史之乱”以来，唐帝国整体机制日见衰朽，外患频仍，内忧不绝，所以诗人感慨“如今”时局已经不像过去那样安定太平了。可是这种国势日衰景况在扬州好像还没有被感知到，人们仍然由着自己的心性，踏着乐器吹奏出的节拍，载歌载舞，通宵达旦。这中间虽有辛辣的嘲讽，但更多的还是对人们感觉迟钝而表现出的深深忧虑。
这首诗不惟内容深刻，而且构思精奇。诗人巧妙地由写扬州繁华夜景开局，最终却落在将人们视线引向对整个唐帝国命运的思考上，显示出一种讽喻的创作意向。
