译文
城头上响起了晨鼓的声音，油灯早已经燃熄灭了。不管是睡着的还是醉了的也始终要醒了过来。听着天空中鸿雁的几声悲鸣。
人的一生就像柳絮一样随风飘散，不管是喜还是悲都是零星的点缀，全像那江中的浮萍一样零落其中。
注释
采桑子：又名《丑奴儿》，《罗敷媚》，《罗敷艳歌》等。采桑子格律为双调四十四字，上下片各四句三平韵。另有添字格，两结句各添二字，两平韵，一叠韵。
高城鼓动：城中晨鼓响起。古代京城凌晨击鼓以解宵禁。兰釭(gāng)灺(xiè)：油灯熄灭。
孤鸿：三国魏阮籍：“孤鸿号外野”
零星：零碎，少量。
连江：满江。点点萍：江面的浮萍。

这首词作于1905年，当时全国各地革命如火如荼，王国维作为旧势的保守派，情绪低落，词中可见当时他意气消沉。

采桑子·高城鼓动兰釭灺鉴赏
“高城鼓动”，说的是凌晨时分。凌晨击鼓是唐代京城的作息制度。后代写旧体诗词都喜欢以古说今，王国维当然也不能免俗。“兰釭灺”是说油灯已经点干了而自动熄灭。耳中听到城中的晨鼓，睁眼看到油灯熄灭，这代表了夜已结束，新的一天又开始了。在“睡也还醒，醉也还醒”这两句的口吻中，有一种不甘心和不情愿的情绪在。是睡还是醉，都可以看成是一种逃避，不敢面对现实。“忽听孤鸿三两声”这句是对前面的一种含蓄的回答。“孤鸿”就是“孤雁”，而且“孤鸿”意味着在奋斗的道路上没有伴侣和得不到理解。
“风前絮”，是说柳絮。暮春时节柳絮飞时纷纷扬扬，把天地搅得一乍朦胧。接着“欢也零星，悲也零星”，“都作连江点点萍”是说人生的悲欢离合就像风关的柳絮一样，最后结局只化作满江浮萍流水而去柳絮在诗词中常代表着一种缠绵、迷惘的情意，落入水中化为浮萍是这美好情意的一种令人感伤的结束。“人生只似风前絮，欢也零星，悲也零星，都作连江点点萍”这几句，似乎已经把人生看透了。
