男子汉只要有一股勇气，又何必像我读许多书本。
尚勇武你的确超过了我，多才艺你对我启发很深。
你将去军队中施展才干，我无事在家里隐居待聘。
等你我成就了功名之后，我跟你学两疏回归山林。
注释
告八：名字事迹不详。告当为姓，与郜同。告八，排行第八。
一片气：一股勇气。
五车书：是说书读得很多。
好勇方过我：用《论语》典故，赞扬告八勇力过人。
多才便起予（yú）：用《论语》典故，夸奖告八有才而且能对自己有所启发。起予：启发我。
运筹（chóu）：指谋划。
幕（mù）：指军中帐幕。这句是说告八将入军幕中参预机密。
养拙（zhuō）：即守拙，指退隐不佳。此句是讲孟浩然自己。
遂：成功。
两疏（shū）：指汉代疏广、疏受叔侄二人。

送告八从军鉴赏
孟浩然“为学三十载，闭门江汉阴”，读了许多书，以求仕途显达，有益于社会。可是“欲济无舟楫”，仕途上屡受挫折，使他陷入了出世和入世的矛盾痛苦中。
第一联“男儿一片气，何必五车书”，以开门见山的方式，描绘出一幅男儿要有英雄气、不必天天在家读书的景致，在武与文的对照中，明确揭示出全篇主旨，把诗人“儒冠误身”的不平之鸣，像江河开闸那样突然迸发出来，给人以强烈的震撼，表现了诗人才大难为用的愤慨心情。这种思想，是由于唐代社会积蕴着浓郁的“英雄”气氛，投笔从戎显然不是诗人的一时激奋之举，而是边塞诗人英雄意识和功名情结长期孕育而产生的结果。
第二联借用《论语》典故，运用概括描写，以旷达的情怀称颂晚辈好勇多才，笔调轻松，感情真挚而又得体。从所用典故来看，告八当为诗人的晚辈。诗人用此诗勉励年轻人从军报国，极具壮逸之气，讴歌建功立业的英雄理想，具有极强的震撼力量。诗人笔下的主人公，心中充盈着豪荡侠情和肝胆意气。有志男儿凭此足以立功边陲。诗人对豪勇意气的赞美之情，正是盛唐人心绪的真实流露。
第三联承接前面的才气对照，再写两人的不同遭遇。一个“运筹将入幕”，一个“养拙就闲居”，在鲜明的对照中，表达出对告八的鼓励和羡慕，流露出自己不得不隐居的苦情。这对当时人们在儒术之外，还重侠尚武的社会思潮作出了很好的揭示。
末联写诗人借用汉代疏广、疏受叔侄二人的典故，以功成身退互勉，在消积申蕴含着积极和奋发，在隐逸中充满了幻想和期望，又告诫告八必须像汉代疏广、疏受叔侄一样，知进知退，切莫贪恋禄位。功成名就之后又双双归卧田园的典故，以抒发诗人对告八必能恃才建功且会功德圆满的信心。这种热切期盼和信心，同样从一个侧面辉映出典型的盛唐面影。
此诗忧而不伤，哀而不怨，虽失意但无苦语，送友人而不见别绪，风格俊爽，颇有韵致。此诗奇句写告八，偶句写自己，句句对照，写得颇有特色。诗中处处闪现着男儿的豪情志节，充溢着一股不同于多婉约情调之宋词的阳刚之气。一方面写告八从军，鼓励他上进；一方面写自己，想求功名后身退。诗中处处照顾到两者的相互关系。最后，以功成身退的“两疏”互勉。写得既真挚而又得体。诗人借送别告八从军，抒发了自己“魏阙心常在修，希求立功成名”的思想，发出了书多无用，功成便退的感慨。

孟浩然（689-740），男，汉族，唐代诗人。本名不详（一说名浩），字浩然，襄州襄阳（今湖北襄阳）人，世称“孟襄阳”。浩然，少好节义，喜济人患难，工于诗。年四十游京师，唐玄宗诏咏其诗，至“不才明主弃”之语，玄宗谓：“卿自不求仕，朕未尝弃卿，奈何诬我？”因放还未仕，后隐居鹿门山，著诗二百余首。孟浩然与另一位山水田园诗人王维合称为“王孟”。
