译文
老祖宗李耳心怀慈悲，怜悯百姓，留下一部《道德经》。如今，当我步入他的寺庙时，不禁心神肃静。
这庙已经很久没有人来过了，荒草茂盛几乎把路掩盖，台阶上落下的灰尘很厚，所以，鸟爪子的印迹深深。
老子出函谷关就到流沙国去了，所以，丹炉的香火无人传承，出关的道路上紫烟迷茫，哪里还有他的行踪？
你走后一千年，我独自面对着这清冷的寺庙，萧瑟的松柏林，怎么不叫人心痛万分？
注释
⑴《宋书》：“灵庙荒残，遗象陈昧。”
⑵《列仙传》：关令尹喜与老子俱游流沙，化胡，服巨胜实，莫知其所终。
⑶《太平御览》：《关令内传》曰：真人尹喜，周大夫也，为关令。少好学，善天文秘纬。登楼四望，见东极有紫气四迈，喜曰：“应有异人过此。”乃斋戒扫道以俟之。及老子度关，喜先戒关吏曰：“若有翁乘青牛薄板车者，勿听过，止以白之。”果至，吏曰：“愿少止。”喜带印绶，设师事之道，老子重辞之。喜曰：“愿为我著书，说大道之意，得奉而行焉。”于是著《道德经》上下二卷。
谒老君庙创作背景
此诗写作时间不好判断。按道理，在唐朝开元和天宝（均为唐玄宗年号）时期都很崇尚道教，而李白拜谒的应该不是一般地方的老子庙，面对如此冷落的道观则可能是安史之乱以后的事情，也许就在李白流放回到安徽的时候。

李白（701年－762年），字太白，号青莲居士，唐朝浪漫主义诗人，被后人誉为“诗仙”。祖籍陇西成纪(待考)，出生于西域碎叶城，4岁再随父迁至剑南道绵州。李白存世诗文千余篇，有《李太白集》传世。762年病逝，享年61岁。其墓在今安徽当涂，四川江油、湖北安陆有纪念馆。
