多惭恩未报，敢问路何长。
万里通秋雁，千峰共夕阳。
旧游成远道，此去更违乡。
草露深山里，朝朝落客裳。
移使鄂州次岘阳馆怀旧居鉴赏
公元772年（唐代宗大历七年）左右，诗人刘长卿结束了十年多闲居流寓生涯，以监察御史、检校祠部员外郎为转运使判官，知淮西鄂岳转运留后。题中的鄂州，在今湖北省鄂城县，是转运使署所在地。
首联从御命赴任写起。“多惭恩未报”系泛泛铺垫之笔，主要是用以引出下句。“敢问路何长”，表面似乎在探问路途遥远实际寄寓对人生之路的探索。第二联承“路何长”写次岘阳馆所见之景。“万里通秋雁”句，也寄寓着诗人自己多年来宦海飘泊及此行中旅途劳顿之感。“千峰共夕阳”句，这里的“千峰共夕阳”，透露着旅途孤寂，只能跟千峰共赏夕阳之意。当然，此次赴任，诗人大可游山玩水、逍遥自在的，他在旅途中的这样劳顿孤寂之感，读者只能从他“路何长”一语中所透露的仕途坎坷之感中找到一点线索。第三联，缴清题目中的“怀旧居”。“旧居”有何可怀，诗中只字未道，可见此诗意不在独居。诗里略略点了一下现在离家乡和旧居越来越远了，不过是想加强“路何长”的感慨。
末联重道旅况，回应首联的“路何长”。诗人虽然说的是旅途跋涉的风霜劳顿，读者却可从中读出诗人回忆十数年的宦途，设想未来时的怅惆与踯躅。“敢问路何长”是这首诗的情感主线，诗人于其中融注了封建社会中一个有吏干而敢于刚而犯上的正直知识分子的忧虑和愤慨。
刘长卿曾以“五言长城”自诩，尤工五律。这首诗运用贴切精工、凝炼自然、清秀淡雅而又谐美流畅的语言来写景抒情，诗的感情真挚动人，风格上则工秀邃密而又委婉多讽。为此卢文弓召在《刘随州文集题辞》中，也指出刘诗“含情悱恻，吐辞委婉，情缠绵而不断，味涵咏而愈旨”。

刘长卿(约726 — 约786)，字文房，汉族，宣城（今属安徽）人，唐代诗人。后迁居洛阳，河间（今属河北）为其郡望。玄宗天宝年间进士。肃宗至德中官监察御史，后为长洲县尉，因事下狱，贬南巴尉。代宗大历中任转运使判官，知淮西、鄂岳转运留后，又被诬再贬睦州司马。德宗建中年间，官终随州刺史，世称刘随州。
