译文
海风吹着我的痩骨，我衣裳单薄，有些寒冷。四月初，我离开京都，到了山海关。望见到处都是关塞的墙垣，飞沙北走；山势向渤海延伸，层峦向东方展开。人迹何在？只见柳树的柔条摇摆不定，草很短，难以形成一片绿色。乍见一树桃花。独自向我微笑。它旁边有短短的颓垣，一湾一湾的曲水。
三月末的山海关，不知有多少东风，感觉不到春天的气息，使我的良好念头一扫而光。我远来此地不是为了寻春，也未尝可惜（辜负）春尽，只是深深地念记着这树桃花，玉容寂寞，在没有人烟的地方，还能经受住几番风吹雨打？还能坚持多久？我也想折一枝桃花，通过西来的驿使，寄给我家乡的亲友，看看关外的春花。
注释
风流子：词牌名。又名《内家娇》。双调，一百一十字，上下片各四平韵。
塞垣（yuán）：指塞外，古代称长城以北为塞外。垣：墙。
溟（míng）渤：指渤海。侵：近。
叠障：此处指长城。叠：重叠。障：指在边塞险要处作防御用的城堡。还：环。
删：削除。
春阑：春残。
玉容：指桃花。
欲附：打算托附。

嘉庆五年（1800年），张惠言奉命诣盛京（沈阳）篆列圣加尊号玉宝。此词作于山海关外，时当四月，京师群芳尽落，而关外桃花尚开。词即以此立意。

词的上片，着重写作者出关后初见桃花的欣喜心情。词的开头两句写塞外春寒料峭。“四月”点明时值暮春，“出榆关”点题，“瘦骨”和“单衣”从两个不同侧面衬托出塞外特有的春寒。“看地尽”二句承“海风吹瘦骨”，写塞外风狂飙猛、飞沙走石的气候特点。“山侵”二句承“单衣冷、四月出榆关”，写群山延伸至渤海、万里长城连绵起伏的地势特征。开头六句，于荒寒中又寓有它特具的辽阔与壮美，格调浑厚。“人何在”七句写塞外春色。“人何在”一句反诘，写明这里人烟稀少，也表明诗人此时心境的孤寂。“柳柔摇不定”，写明在内地已是芳菲落尽、大地春归的时市，这里却是杨柳尚未吐叶丝，还是早春稚柳，没有到密叶藏鸦的时候。柳色向来是春天的标志，诗人们总是首先在青青柳色中发现春意，发现春天的脚步、声音和身影。捕捉住“柳柔摇不定”这个典型形象，便颇为简洁地写出了边地春迟的特点，令人宛见在无边荒漠中几株杨柳在凛烈的寒风中摇曳着光秃秃的空枝，看不到一点绿色的荒寒景象。而“草短绿应难”一句，仍紧扣“春迟”写边地风物，却又另换了一幅笔墨，边寨小草才刚刚泛青，还是早春景色。诗人用一“难”字，抒写了感叹边地荒寒，希望尽早看到芳草绿遍天涯的心情。就在诗人急于寻觅边地春意的时候。他蓦然发现，在那低矮的断壁残垣旁，弯曲的小湾边，有一树桃花在迎风怒放。它给萧条冷落的塞外大地带来了勃勃生机，使羁旅边地的行人感到莫大的欣慰。它好象是为了迎接远方的来客，才“向人独笑”的。这种拟人化的手法，使作品情趣盎然，可渭传神之笔。“桃花向人笑”，情景热烈。但配之以“一树”与“独”，热烈之中又包含着寂寞。“独”字生动地写出了边塞天冷花稀的特有景色。这里尚未到百花吐艳春意浓郁的时分，一般树木枝峭上还是空疏疏的，空气里的花香仍夹带着料峭的春寒，蜜蜂不见飞来采蜜，只有一堵颓垣和一湾曲水相伴。在这种情景下，独自盛开的桃花，不仅没有感到孤寂，反而以热烈的情怀向人绽开了笑脸。这一“笑”字，活画出桃花蔑视严寒的刚毅风姿。诗人的喜爱之情漫溢到这树桃花的每一枝枝条上，于是客观的物象又蒙上了人的主观心境的投影。诗人把桃花写得如此生动具体，天真可爱，活灵活现。“摇不定”与“海风”相呼应，“草短”与“冷”相呼应，使作品前后浑然一体。用“一树”“独笑”与“惊沙北走”相对比，再用“颓垣短短，曲水弯弯”加以映衬，更显出塞外的荒寒和桃花不畏寒冷的坚强品格，表现了词人对桃花的赞美与喜爱，微露惜春之意。
词的下片着重抒写惜春的感情。“东风”三句，写作者由关外桃花，联想到京城的春意阑珊，惜春之意渐浓。“不为”六句写作者喜爱桃花的原因。作者先说“不为寻春较远，辜负春阑”，说明自己并不是为了躲避京都的落红无数的残春景象才到关外寻春，才分外喜爱桃花的，然后用“念玉容寂寞，更无人处，经他风雨，能几多番”直接点破原因：作者看到桃花寂寞地开放在荒无人烟的空旷塞外，没有人欣赏她那美丽的“玉容”，况且京都三月末，春意就渐渐消逝了，这桃花“更能消几番风雨”（宋辛弃疾《摸鱼儿·更能消几番风雨》）。作者不由得同情起桃花不幸的命运来。结尾两句用想托西来驿使给京都带回一枝塞外桃花的心理描写，把对惜春感情的抒写推向了高潮。
这首词以塞外的荒寒和雄伟的地势作为大背景，以“颓垣”“曲水”作为小背景，写出了桃花不畏严寒狂风的坚毅不屈的风姿，再以京城的春阑反衬桃花的命薄如纸，用欲托人捎回京城以使桃花芳姿长在，来表现词人对桃花的无比爱怜，从而细腻而曲折地表达了作者惜春的感情，显示出作者取材的新颖与构思的巧妙。

张惠言（1761～1802）清代词人、散文家。原名一鸣，字皋文，一作皋闻，号茗柯，武进（今江苏常州）人。嘉庆四年进士，官编修。少为词赋，深于易学，与惠栋、焦循一同被后世称为“乾嘉易学三大家”。又尝辑《词选》，为常州词派之开山，著有《茗柯文集》。
