译文
玉炉散发着炉香烟，红色的蜡烛滴着烛泪，摇曳的光影映照出华丽屋宇的凄迷。她的蛾眉颜色已褪，鬓发也已零乱，漫漫长夜无法安眠，只觉枕被一片寒凉。
窗外的梧桐树，正淋着三更的冷雨，也不管屋内的她正为别离伤心。一滴一滴的雨点，正凄厉地敲打着一叶一叶的梧桐，滴落在无人的石阶上，一直到天明。
注释
更漏子：词牌名。它类似渊源于欧洲中世纪骑士文学的《小夜曲》，歌唱的是午夜情事。
画堂：华丽的内室。
鬓（bìn）云：鬓发如云。
衾（qīn）：被子。
梧桐：落叶乔木，古人以为是凤凰栖止之木。
不道：不管、不理会的意思。
更漏子·玉炉香鉴赏
温庭筠共写过六首内容相仿的《更漏子》。这首《更漏子》，借“更漏”夜景咏妇女相思情事，词从夜晚写到天明。
开头三个字，表面看是景语，不像后来李清照《醉花阴·重阳》的“薄雾浓云愁永昼，瑞脑消金兽”含有以炉烟袅袅来表示愁思无限的意思。次句“红蜡泪”就不同了：夜间燃烛，用以照明，但多了一个“泪”字，便含有了人的感情。说“玉炉”，既见其精美，又见其色洁；“红蜡”则透出色泽的艳丽而撩人情思，而闺中的寂寞也隐隐流露出来了。“画堂”，写居室之美，与“玉炉”、“红蜡”相映衬。这句紧承上句，说红蜡所映照是画堂中人的秋思。“秋思”，是一种看不见、摸不着、深藏于人心中的情愫，红蜡是不能“照”到的，可是作者却执拗地强调“偏照”。“偏照”者，非照不可也。这一来，将室内的华美陈设与人的感情，巧妙地联系起来了。此刻，在这美丽的画堂中，冷清寂静，只有玉炉之香，红蜡之泪，与女主人公相伴，不管它们是有意、无意，但在她看来，却是“偏照”。至此，是蜡在流泪，抑或人在流泪，浑融一体，更反衬女主人公的“秋思”之深。概言之，第一句主要是衬景，二句景中含情，三句感情色彩强烈，女主人公的愁肠百结，呼之而出了。陈匪石云：“词固言情之作，然但以情言，薄矣。必须融情入景，由景见情。”（《旧时月色斋词谭》）这里“融情入景”是逐步深入的，至“偏照”始喷涌而出。
“眉翠薄，鬓云残”，两句写人。以翠黛描眉，见其眉之美。鬓云，是形容美发如云，可知其人之美。但紧接着用了一个“薄”字，一个“残”字，景况便完全不同了。“薄”字形容眉黛褪色，“残”字描绘鬓发不整。这两个字反映出她辗转反侧、无法入睡的情态，不仅写外貌，也同时写出了她内心难言的苦闷。“夜长衾枕寒”，继续写思妇独处无眠的感受，它不仅点明了时间：长夜漫漫；写出了人的感觉：衾枕生寒，如李清照怀念外出丈夫时的“半夜凉初透”。由此可知上面的一切景物，都是夜长不寐之人目之所见，身之所感。这些景物如粒粒珍珠，用“秋思”这条线把它们串了起来。
上阕写画堂中人所见，下阕从室内转到室外，写人的所闻。秋夜三更冷雨，点点滴滴在梧桐树上，这离情之苦没有人可以理解。它与“偏照画堂秋思”呼应，可见“秋思”即是离情。下面再作具体描述：“一叶叶，一声声，空阶滴到明。”潇潇秋雨不理会闺中少妇深夜怀人的苦情，只管让雨珠洒在一张张梧桐叶上，滴落在窗外的石阶上，一直滴到天明，还没有休止。秋雨连绵不停，正如她的离情连绵无尽。李清照《声声慢》：“梧桐更兼细雨，到黄昏点点滴滴，这次第，怎一个愁字了得。”由玉炉生香、红蜡滴泪的傍晚，到闻“三更雨”，再看“滴到明”，女主人公的彻夜不眠，当然更非“一个愁字了得”了。
这首词通首写画堂人的“秋思”“离情”，上阕的意境，在《花间集》中颇常见，下阕的写法则独辟蹊径。陈廷焯说“梧桐树”数语，用笔较快，而意味无上文章之厚。其实，“用笔快”如果一泻千里，言尽意止，固然不好；但这里并非如此。谭献说“梧桐树”以下似直下语，正从“夜长”逗出，亦书家“无垂不缩”之法。书法中的所谓“垂”，指竖笔；在作竖笔时，最后须往上逆缩一下，使字体不失其气势。比之于词，即是看似直率，纵笔而下，但须顿挫深厚，跌宕而有情致，似直而实纡也。《更漏子》下阕，写梧桐夜语，正有此特色。这里直接写雨声，间接写思妇，亦是“夜长衾枕寒”的进一步说明；但整夜不眠却仍用暗示，始终未曾点破，这就是直致中有含蓄之处。所以说此词深得书家“无垂不缩”之法，即是指它“直说”中仍适当地配合以“含蓄”，否则便会使人有一览无余、索然寡味之感了。宋人聂胜琼《鹧鸪天·别情》词有句云：“枕前泪共阶前雨，隔个窗儿滴到明。”当是从此词脱胎而来，写得语浅情深；但全词并不像此词上下片浓淡相间，又缺乏转折变化，相较之下，韵味亦是略逊一筹。

温庭筠（约812—866）唐代诗人、词人。本名岐，字飞卿，太原祁（今山西祁县东南）人。富有天才，文思敏捷，每入试，押官韵，八叉手而成八韵，所以也有“温八叉”之称。然恃才不羁，又好讥刺权贵，多犯忌讳，取憎于时，故屡举进士不第，长被贬抑，终生不得志。官终国子助教。精通音律。工诗，与李商隐齐名，时称“温李”。其诗辞藻华丽，秾艳精致，内容多写闺情。其词艺术成就在晚唐诸词人之上，为“花间派”首要词人，对词的发展影响较大。在词史上，与韦庄齐名，并称“温韦”。存词七十余首。后人辑有《温飞卿集》及《金奁集》。
