驰聘疆场、转战南北是为了报答皇上对我的信任，南北江畔和北方边关的花草都笑我一生忙忙碌碌。一年三百六十日，我都是带着兵器骑着战马在疆场上度过的。
注释
南北驱驰：戚继光曾在东南沿海一带抗击倭宼的侵扰，又曾镇守北方边关。
主：指明朝皇帝。
边月：边塞的月亮。这里的边塞指山东沿海登州卫等地。
江花边草：南方江边和北方边塞的花草树木。
横戈：手里握着兵器。
马上作鉴赏
“南北驱驰报主情，江花边草笑平生。”从福建、广东到蓟州，可说一在天南，一在地北。“南北驱驰”四字，概尽戚继光一生大节。“报主情”，并非不喜欢安定的生活，只是心怀天下，为了国家的安宁，不惜万里奔波。全句表现出一种崇高的襟怀。而次句一“笑”字更是意极浑含，写尽了抗倭名将的豪迈气概。为了抗倭事业，一生中到过山清水秀的南方，也到过波涛汹涌的山东海防，行色匆匆间，总无暇顾及周围美好的景色。作者说：江畔紫嫣红的鲜花和江防皎洁明朗的月亮恐怕要笑我不懂得欣赏了吧。
“一年三百六十日，都是横戈马上行。”这两句是“平生”、“南北驱驰”的更具体的说明。一个保家卫国的英雄形像跃然纸上，他是紧紧与战马与横戈联在一起，不能须臾分离的。“一年三百六十日”初读似乎是一个凑句，其实很有妙用。它出现在“都是横戈马上行”的点睛之笔的前面，起到了必要的渲染作用，使读者感到，一日横戈马上英勇奋战并不难，难的是三百六十天如一日，更难的是年年如此，“平生”如此。
