昔齐攻鲁，求其岑鼎。鲁侯伪献他鼎而请盟焉。齐侯不信，曰：“若柳季云是，则请受之。”鲁欲使柳季。柳季曰：“君以鼎为国，信者亦臣之国，今欲破臣之国，全君之国，臣所难”鲁侯乃献岑鼎。

译文
从前，齐国攻打鲁国，要索取鲁国的镇国之宝-岑鼎。鲁国国君悄悄地换了另外一个鼎献给齐君，并向齐君请求订立合约。齐君不相信鲁君会把真的岑鼎送来，便提出：“如果柳季说这是真品，那么我就接受它。”鲁君只得去请求柳季。柳季说：“您把岑鼎当作是国家的重器，而我则把信用看成立身处事的根本。眼下你想破坏臣的根本，保全您的国家，这是臣下难以办到的事。”鲁君无奈只得将岑鼎献给齐君。
注释
岑鼎：鲁国名鼎的名称。古代把鼎作为立国的重器。
柳季：鲁国最诚实而讲信用的人,柳下惠，一称柳季。
以……为：把……当做。
国：此指极珍贵的珍宝。
信：诚信。
破：破坏。
全：保全。
难：困难。

丘明（姓姜，氏丘，名明），华夏人，生于前502年，死于前422年，享年80岁。丘穆公吕印的后代。本名丘明，因其先祖曾任楚国的左史官，故在姓前添“左”字，故称左史官丘明先生，世称“左丘明”，后为鲁国太史 。左氏世为鲁国太史，至丘明则约与孔子（前551-479）同时，而年辈稍晚。他是当时著名史家、学者与思想家，著有《春秋左氏传》、《国语》等。他左丘明的最重要贡献在于其所著《春秋左氏传》与《国语》二书。左氏家族世为太史，左丘明又与孔子一起“如周，观书于周史”，故熟悉诸国史事，并深刻理解孔子思想。
