丐不如其乡里，明孝宗时，尝行乞于吴。凡丐所得，多不食，每贮直之竹筒中。见者以为异，久之，诘其故，曰：“吾有母在，将以遗之。”有好事者欲窥其究，迹之行。行里许，至河旁，竹树掩映，一蔽舟系柳阴下。舟虽蔽，颇洁，有老媪坐其中。丐坐地，出所贮饮食整理之，奉以登舟。俟母举杯，乃起唱歌，为儿戏，以娱母。母食尽，然后他求。一日乞道上，无所得，惫甚。有沈孟渊者，哀而与之食，丐宁忍饿，终不先母食也。如是者数年，母死，丐不知所终。丐自言沈姓，年可三十。
孝丐译文及注释
译文
一个乞丐的生活状况不如他的同乡人。明孝宗年间，这个乞丐曾经在吴地乞讨。每次乞到的食物多数都不吃，把它储存在一个竹筒中。看见的人都对这件事感到很奇怪，时间长了，就有人问乞丐这是为什么，乞丐说：“我还有老母亲在世，(这些食物)将要送给她。”有好事的人想偷看事情的究竟，于是跟随乞丐。走了几里路到了河边，竹树掩盖映照在一片柳阴下系着一叶小舟，小舟虽然很破旧,但是很干净。有一个老妇人坐在里面。乞丐坐在地上拿出储存的食物整理一下，然后端到船上，等母亲吃的时候，他就唱歌，表演儿戏，使母亲高兴，等母亲吃完了才做别的。有一天乞丐什么也没有乞到，十分疲惫，有一个叫沈孟渊的看他可怜给他食物，但是乞丐宁可饿着也要先给母亲吃，这样过了多少年后，乞丐的母亲去世了，以后也再看不到乞丐了，听说乞丐说自己姓沈，年龄大约三十岁左右。
