译文
不能插翅飞向寥远苍茫的太空，却违心地在湘黔来去浪游。
三年来客居在荒僻的夜郎地，今秋有幸到洞庭湖上泛一叶小舟。
翩飞的白鹭激起了诗的灵感，又见青山隐现在天的尽头。
但我仍嫌未能饱览奇绝的景色，于是舍舟泊岸登上岳阳楼。
注释
苍茫：形容洞庭湖的景色。
浪荡游：毫无意思的放浪江湖之游。
夜郎客：诗人曾在靠近古夜郎国的峡州任职。
柁：同“舵”，这里指代船。
登岳阳楼创作背景
岳阳楼坐落在岳阳（今属湖南）城西门上，唐朝开元年间所建，宋仁宗时重修，为游赏胜地，自唐以来，写岳阳楼的诗文很多。萧德藻这一首作于南宋时期，具体时间不详，题写的是登临岳阳楼之前的所见所感。杨万里《诚斋诗话》录有此诗，但字句有所出入。

登岳阳楼鉴赏
题写岳阳楼的诗文很多，萧德藻虽与与杜甫之作同题，但他避开了原有名篇的格局，写登临前所见所感，最后采用了王之涣的《登鹳雀楼》篇末点题法来题写岳阳楼。这样写算是比较聪明的。
首联便发感慨：“苍茫”原意指旷远无边的样子，“浪荡”则指放浪游荡，这里相对而言，乃是别有含义，不妨说是诗人抒发这样的感慨：可叹不能像范蠡那样，乘扁舟到遥远的五湖去，在那海阔天空处尽情遨游，却违背着心愿，被拘在湖南游来荡去。
颔联承上，叙述自己几年来的“浪荡游”。诗人的慨然是不无道理的。他三年夜郎为客，今秋今日又泛一叶扁舟在洞庭湖上，的确是不曾挪离湖南一步的浪荡游。关于萧德藻的生平，资料很少，不过根据此联所写，倒可略知一二。
颈联写游洞庭。身置八百里洞庭之上，目接湖光山色，诗人不由得兴致勃勃。随着船身的一颠一簸，他的眼光也上上下下、远远近近地搜寻着美景，忽而在白鹭翩翩起飞处，他捕捉到了美，从而激起了灵感，吟出了诗句；忽而又在那遥远的天尽头，他看到了隐隐青山。“得句鹭飞处”颇有诗味，与下句动静结合得妙，很有情趣，虽无“吴楚东南坼，乾坤日夜浮”的气势，也算诗中较好的一联。白鹭、远山，画面开阔；一动一静，境界多变。然而诗人意犹未足，于是引出下一联。
尾联上句说“犹嫌未奇绝”，意犹未足；下句说“更上岳阳楼”，干脆弃周登岸，他要高瞻远瞩，在更开阔的视野中，去发现“奇绝”的景色。这里化用王之涣的“欲穷千里目，更上一层楼”，虽然不能别创新境，也做不到更深刻，更尖锐，更集中凝炼，更激动人心，却也换了一种说法，有些新趣。

萧德藻，南宋诗人。字东夫，自号千岩老人。闽清（今属福建）人。生卒年不详。绍兴二十一年(1151)进士。初任尤川县丞，后为湖北参议，再调湖州乌程令。因爱当地山水之美，遂移家乌程，住县中屏山，其地有千岩之胜，所以自号“千岩老人”，表示归隐不仕。
