译文
锦江滑腻峨眉山秀丽，变幻出卓文君和薛涛这样的才女。
言语巧妙好像偷得了鹦鹉的舌头，文章华丽好像分得了凤凰的羽毛。
擅长文词的人都纷纷停下了自己的笔，公侯们个个想像王浚梦刀升迁那样离开那里，他们都自愧弗如。
分别后远隔烟水无限思念，这思念就像庭院里菖蒲花开那样盛，像天上祥云那样高。
注释
薛涛：字洪度，中唐时出名歌妓。
锦江：在今四川成都市南。滑腻，平滑细腻。峨眉：峨眉山，在今四川峨眉县西南。此均用以泛指蜀地。
幻出：化出，生出。文君：卓文君，西汉人，美而多才。慕司马相如之才，与之私奔，为千古之风流佳话的主人公。
巧偷鹦鹉舌：比喻言辞锋利善辩。鹦鹉在古代被认为是善言之鸟。
凤皇毛：比文采斑斓。凤皇：即凤凰。
纷纷：众多貌。辞客：文人，诗人。停笔：谓文士们多因自感才学不及薛涛而搁笔。
梦刀：梦见刀州，即想到蜀地为官。
烟水：泛指风烟山水。
菖蒲：草名，有香气，生于水边。五云：祥云，瑞云。旧以为仙子居处。

寄赠薛涛创作背景
元和四年（809）三月，元稹授监察御史，出使东川。这一年他年方三十，妻子韦氏尚未去世。元稹到了东川，便与当时有名的女诗人薛涛一见钟情，卿卿我我走到一处。若《全唐诗话》所云可信，则此诗当作于长庆元年（821），因元稹任翰林学士，仅于此年有过一次。

寄赠薛涛鉴赏
元稹以其艳诗和悼亡诗而闻名，但他的用情不一和对薛涛的始乱终弃，一直被后人诟病。而且，其妻韦氏去世当年，元稹便在江陵府纳妾，不少人认为他口是心非。此诗是元稹写给薛涛的回信，为表达离别之后的对薛涛思念之情。
诗作所云，单就作品内容而言，几乎全是对薛涛的赞美。“锦江滑腻峨嵋秀，幻出文君与薛涛”，说薛涛为山川名秀所生，同时又以卓文君类比。“滑腻”、“秀”等赞美之词，作者信手拈来，用词巧妙。接下来的两联则说其巧于言语，极具文才，擅长文词的人都纷纷搁笔，公侯们也都自愧弗如。而末二句“别后相思隔烟水，菖蒲花发五云高”，可以看出还是寄寓了作者很深的缅怀之情的。“菖蒲花发五云高”，这是婉曲表示自己思慕薛涛，而又无由相会的惆怅心情。据说菖蒲花不易开，开则人以为祥。“菖蒲花”在此暗喻薛涛，所谓“菖蒲花发”，句面意思是说自己曾见过这种不易开的花，实际即说自己与薛涛曾有亲密交往。“五云高”即空望美人居处而不可及之。这句写得甚为含蓄。
此诗就思想性而言，无甚可取。不过是极赞薛涛人才、诗才及辞令之美，表示自己无由再会而怅然相恋之情。然全篇一气贯下，浑然成章，亦是才子佳人相赠的得意之笔。

元稹（779年－831年，或唐代宗大历十四年至文宗大和五年），字微之，别字威明，唐洛阳人（今河南洛阳）。父元宽，母郑氏。为北魏宗室鲜卑族拓跋部后裔，是什翼犍之十四世孙。早年和白居易共同提倡“新乐府”。世人常把他和白居易并称“元白”。
