李观（公元766--794年）字元宾，先为陇西人，后家江东。生于唐代宗大历元年，卒于德宗贞元十年，年二十九岁。（新唐书本传不载卒于何年。此据韩愈撰墓志及直斋书录解题）年二十四，举进士后三年，为贞元八年（公元792年）与韩愈同登第。明年，试博学宏辞，观中其科，而愈不在选。官太子校书郎。又一年，病卒。唐末陆希声辑其文为《李观文集》（后人或题《李元宾文集》）三卷，宋初赵昂另辑《后集》二卷，今皆存。观为文不袭沿前人，独辟蹊径，时谓与韩愈相上下。及观早夭，而愈后文益功。韩愈称其“才高于当世，而行出于古人”（《李元宾墓铭》）。
