西晋太原晋阳人，字武子。王浑子。武帝婿。少有逸才，风姿英爽，好弓马，勇力绝人。弱冠拜中书郎，迁侍中。善《易》、《老》、《庄》，长于清言，修饰辞令。武帝亲贵之。以屡请武帝勿使齐王攸(武帝弟)归藩，忤旨，左迁国子祭酒。数年，入为侍中。后被斥，外移北芒山下。性豪侈，丽服玉食，尝以人乳蒸肫。善解马性，有马癖。后以白衣领太仆。年四十六卒。
