常州府武进人，字用中，号养斋。弘治十五年进士。授广平推官。召为刑部主事。出为登州知府，滨海多盗，尽捕之。调临江，修坏堤七十二处。累迁广东左布政使。嘉靖十一年以右副都御史巡抚贵州，讨杀父之独山土官蒙钺。官至南京户部尚书。引疾去，卒谥庄裕。有《读书劄记》、《山堂萃稿》。
