亳州谯县人，字元翰。鲁宗道从子。仁宗皇祐五年进士。好礼学，通《左氏春秋》。知确山县，有治绩，富弼荐其有古循吏风。神宗熙宁变法，因不合王安石意，出通判杭州。历知卫、冀二州，皆有惠政。哲宗元祐中知信阳军及洺、滑州，复知冀州。官至中大夫。卒年七十五。
