生卒年不详。广平(今河北鸡泽东南)人。玄宗天宝初任醴泉尉，后转太子正字。与李白相遇于坊州，白尝有《酬坊州王司马与阎正字对雪见赠》诗。事迹散见《元和姓纂》卷五、《国秀集》目录。阎宽有诗名于开元、天宝时，芮挺章选诗5首入《国秀集》，李白赞其诗“沉郁富才力”。《全唐诗》存诗5首。
