南朝陈吴兴武康人，字礼明，或作初明。沈瑀孙，沈续子。少有文名。仕梁，为尚书左户侍郎、吴令。侯景陷建康，景将宋子仙欲委以书记，坚辞，几被杀。后入王僧辩幕府，羽檄军书，皆出其手。西魏陷荆州，被虏。以母在南，上表陈情，获归淮南。陈武帝即位，加通直散骑常侍，预谋军国大政。文帝又重其才，会寇乱，欲使因是立功，加明威将军，遣还乡里收合徒众，以疾卒于吴中，时年五十九。谥恭子。
