杨奂，又名知章，字焕然，乾州奉天人。生于金世宗大定二十六年，卒于元宪宗五年，年七十岁。早丧母，哀毁如成人。金末，尝作万言策，指陈时病；欲上不果。元初，隐居为教授，学者称为紫阳先生。耶律楚材荐为河南廉访使，约束一以简易。在官十年请老。卒，谥文宪。奂著作很多，有还山前集八十一卷，后集二十卷，（元史作还山集六十卷，元好问作奂神道碑则称一百二十卷）近鉴三十卷，韩子十卷，槩言二十五篇，砚纂八卷，北见记三卷，正统纪六十卷等，传于世。
