公元前494年，吴王夫差率军在夫椒大败越王勾践，并破了越国的首都。越王勾践派大夫文种向吴国求和，吴王准备答应。伍子胥认为不能许和说“为虺弗摧，为蛇将若何？”吴王不听他的建议，除恶未尽结果在20年后被勾践所消灭。
