河南府尹李彦实与女儿玉英相依为命，由于被人诬陷，他向刘员外借十两银子前去受审。刘员外借此逼玉英嫁给他。玉英在尼姑庵与进京赶考的张晋卿私订终身，张生考中归来任洛阳县令，玉英让他还掉刘员外的债才能死心塌地地生活。
