望尘莫及的成语故事

基本解释望见前面骑马的人走过扬起的尘土而不能赶上。比喻远远落在后面。尘：尘土；莫：不；及：赶上。

出处南朝 宋 范晔《后汉书 赵咨传》：“复拜东海相，之官，道经荥阳，令敦煌曹暠，咨之故孝廉也，迎路谒候。咨不为留，暠送至亭次，望尘不及。”

望尘莫及的典故

东汉时期，敦煌太守赵咨推荐曹暠任荥阳县令，赵咨调往东海任职经过荥阳时，曹暠等在路口迎候，想请他在荥阳暂住。赵咨不想惊动别人就没有停留，车子很快就过去。曹暠想送他到城外的十里长亭，可追到长亭，赵咨的车子早就望尘莫及。
