东晋时期，氏族人苻坚率领百万大军向东晋王朝发起进攻。谢安奉命率8万大军迎战，他指挥有方，经常大胜苻坚。一次他同客人下棋，谢玄拿着前方捷报给谢安。谢安看后默不做声，下完棋后才对客人说捷报，客人称他有庙堂之量。
