东汉末年赤壁大战后，曹操败弃荆州、南郡、襄阳三城，刘备趁机派兵独占这三座城池，周瑜回师后大怒，派鲁肃去责问诸葛亮。诸葛亮说他是代荆州原主人刘琦管理。刘琦死后，鲁肃去讨还荆州，诸葛亮说待打下西川后再还，鲁肃无奈而返。
