基本解释据《韩诗外传》卷三载，周公殷勤待客，甚至于“一饭三吐哺”，唯恐失天下之士。又据《史记·高祖本纪》载，郦食其求见刘邦，刘邦方踞床洗足。郦生不拜，且斥其不宜踞见长者，于是刘邦起而谢之，延上坐。后世遂以“吐哺辍洗”为礼贤下士之典实。

吐哺辍洗的典故

秦朝末年，刘邦驻守陈留县，才学过人的郦食其去投奔刘邦，刘邦正在洗脚，郦食其不拜并指责不尊重长者。刘邦一听赶忙起立道歉，请郦食其上坐。后来郦食其成为刘邦的得力谋士，为刘邦一统天下而出谋划策。
