胁肩谄笑的典故

公孙丑一天问孟子，古代一些士子并不主动去谒见诸侯，是什么道理。孟子回答道：古代的人，如果自己不是诸侯的臣子，就不去谒见。历史上曾发生过这样两件事：魏文侯去看段干木，段干木却跳墙躲起来了；鲁穆公去看泄柳，泄柳紧关大门坚决不见。他们都做得过分了，要是逼迫要见，还是可以相见的。阳货想让孔子来见他，又担心这样做失礼。但当时有这样的习俗：大夫对士子有赏赐，如果此人不在家，不得亲自拜谢，事后必须亲自登门答谢大夫。因此，阳货便打听那天孔子外出不在家时，给他送去一个火腿。而孔子，对阳货并无好感，根本不想见他。于是他也采取阳货的办法，打听阳货外出不在家时，到阳货家回谢。当时，如若阳货不搞小动作，先去看孔子，孔子岂能不见他？曾子说过这样的话：“胁肩谄笑，简直比夏天在菜园种菜还感到累和难受。”子路也曾说道：“观点不同的人在一起谈话，脸上还要显露出羞愧的神色，我是难以理解的。”
