斩草除根的典故

隐公六年，卫国与陈国联合讨伐郑国。郑庄公战败，向陈桓公求和。陈桓公不同意。他的弟弟劝他：“跟善人处好关系，跟邻国友好相处，这是立国根本，你就与他和好了吧！”陈桓公生气地说：“宋、卫是大国，我们陈国不是他们的对手，不打还说得过去；可是郑国是个小国，为什么不攻打它呢？”于是陈桓公坚持继续攻伐郑国。两年以后，郑国国力强大了起来，派兵攻打陈国。陈国大败，陈国的邻国都没有前来救助。就此事，百姓纷纷议论，说：“陈国自作自受，自讨苦吃，这就是长期做恶事却不知道悔过的结果。古书上说，做恶事很容易，恶事就如同草原上突然燃起的大火，无法扑灭，最后烧到自己的头上。周朝有一位大夫名叫周任，他就讲过这样的一个道理：作为一国的国君，要能做到当机立断，对待恶人、恶事，就像农夫在田间铲草一样，一定要连根挖掉，不让它们有再生长的可能。”
