唐朝时期，节度使安禄山起兵叛乱，唐玄宗任命朔方节度使郭子仪去讨伐安禄山，他料敌如神，斩叛将周万顷，击退高秀岩，收复方中、马邑等地。又与河东节度使李光弼一起击败史思明，受到唐肃宗的重用。
