期期艾艾的典故

据《史记》记载：汉初有个将军叫周昌，沛县（今属江苏）人。秦末，为泗水卒史，农民战争中归刘邦，并从刘邦入关破秦，任中尉，后升至御史大夫，封汾阴侯。周昌为人正直，敢于直言。他口吃，说起话来很费劲。当时，汉高祖刘邦想废掉太子刘盈，另立如意为太子。周昌对此坚决反对，并向刘邦提出劝谏，说：“我不善言辞，但知此事不能这么办，如陛下想废太子，我就不服从您的命令了。”因为周昌口吃，在说上述话时，把本不需重叠的“期”字说成了“期期”。

据《世说新语》记载：三国时，魏将邓艾口吃，但应对巧妙。他在自称名字时，常常连说：“艾……艾”。有一次，晋文王和他开玩笑说：“你老说‘艾……艾’，究竟是几个艾呀？”邓艾回答说：“‘凤兮，凤兮’本来就是一个凤。”

根据以上记载，后人引伸出“期期艾艾”这句成语，形容口吃的人说话不流利。
