出处汉·韩婴《韩诗外传》卷四：“十子者，不能亲也，无置锥之地，而王公不能与争名，则是圣人之未得志者也。”《汉书·食货志》：“富者田连仟佰，贫者亡（无）立锥之地。”

春秋时期，楚国王宫艺人优孟听说前相国孙叔敖死后儿子过着十分清贫的生活，觉得过意不去，就穿戴孙叔敖的衣冠，模仿他的音容笑貌去见楚王，楚王即景生情，优孟趁机讲述孙叔敖儿子贫无立锥之地，楚王深受感动，就重封孙叔敖的儿子。
