东晋豫州刺史谢尚发现袁虎文才很好，就把他推荐给大司马桓温。桓温让他负责府内文书起草工作。袁尚作《东征赋》赞扬东晋许多名士。他跟随桓温北伐前燕，在前线，桓温让他写讨伐檄文，他靠在马背上很快就写完一篇得体的檄文。
