南宋时期，朝廷内部在朱熹倡导的“道学”上分为两派，权臣韩侂胄极力排斥朱熹，认为道学为伪学，道学代表结为死党，目的是想篡位。在这种情况下，道学代表们小心翼翼、一举一动都绳趋尺步。有人建议朱熹解散学堂，朱熹总是笑而不答。
